God of his infinite goodness and bounty hath by the medium of Plants, bestowed almost all food, clothing, and medicine upon man.” – Gerarde’s Herbal (1636)

The use of essential oils can be traced back as early as the eighteenth dynasty. Ancient Egyptians have mastered the knowledge and healing benefits of aromatic medicine and aromatherapy. The first people to dispense aromatics were the ancient Egyptian priests. They often utilized scent and smell during sacred ceremonies. Even today, certain plant based oils and scents are used to ‘anoint’ or set apart something or someone in sanctity.

In addition to it being used in sacred and spiritual settings, aromatics and aromatherapy belongs to the realm of natural therapeutics, aiding in the healing of mind, body, and soul. The effects of essences are both physiological and psychological.

Essential oils have profound effects on the physical body. The life force of certain plants and herbs can assist in the correction of physical ailments. In doing so, particular essences are used to treat and support the digestive system. Smell and olfaction is a vital component in digestion. The smell and aroma of food stimulates the secretion of salivary juices which helps the body to properly breakdown and digest food. Specific spices are used to treat digestive disorders such as clove, cinnamon, and sometimes rosemary.

The essences of various plant and herbs can be used to treat almost any part and almost any function of the physical body such as the cardio-vascular system, the lymphatic system, the respiratory system, the reproductive system, as well as the endocrine and nervous system just to name a few.

Essential oils and aromatherapy have also been known to treat the mind and psychosomatic illnesses and dis-eases. Our mind affects our body through the autonomic nervous system. When we experience and maintain peace of mind, our soul is able to shine through, promoting love, joy, happiness, generosity, and prosperity. Nervousness and anxiety have been treated using essences of lavender, rose, jasmine, and even frankincense and sandalwood.

There are two very important factors to consider when experiencing aromatics to treat the mind. First, essential oils have a dual action. Its pleasant aroma is appealing to the senses which soothes the mind. Aromatic scents can and will either serve as a nerve stimulant or a nerve sedative.

Secondly, in order for the essences to work its magic within the mind, perception by smell must be initiated. Through the sense of smell, aromatics have a direct and rapid effect on the mind. Fortunately, essential oils are so powerful and highly aromatic that it is impossible to use them without olfaction taking place.

The more one uses essential oils, the more one can see the powerful benefits the essences have on the mind, body, and soul!
